Sanded tile grout is used to represent ballast and dirt.  The ultra fine powder works well for HO scale.

My homemade static grass applicator.  Built from plans found online, the total cost was under 20 dollars.  These retail for nearly 300!

The result.  This is my first attempt with static grass scenery and I am delighted with the outcome.  Sanded tile grout is used for ballast while course turf is added to the static grass for depth and variety.  The trees are Scenic Express SuperTrees.
